Variety: Hot Summer Days

A "Valentine's Day"-style romantic multi-strander, "Hot Summer Days," Fox's virgin venture into Chinese-language production and distribution, bubbles along with a jaunty but unoriginal blend of the sweet, tart, cute and weepy.

According to a report from Taiwan's Apple Daily, Takeshi Kaneshiro and Shu Qi will play husband and wife in Hou Hsiao-Hsien's long rumored, since 2007, martial arts fantasy film (The Assassin). The cast also includes Chang Chen and Tadanobu Asano and begins low-key shooting in Nara, Japan now that Shu Qi's If You Are the One 2 has wrapped up. [In July, HHH was granted a $625,000 production subsidy from the Taiwan government's National Development Fund and assurance that 30 percent of the budget would be provided.]

Ann Hui directed Andy in his first film, Boat People, although she originally invited Chow Yun-Fat And Li Tiansheng cast Andy in his first TV series a cop drama which costarred Deanie Ip and Tony Leung Chiu-Wai. Andy said he planned to invite Idy Chan, Chow Yun-Fat and the other Five Tigers [Felix Wong, Michael Miu, Kent Tong, Tony Leung Chiu-Wai] as concert guest performers.

Hot Summer Days in Black and White

Hot Summer Days has been in release for 3 weeks on the mainland and reaped $110M at the box office with expectations of ultimately reaching $200M with only 400 prints. In Hong Kong, the box office has been poor due to a lack of theater slots and competition from films like 72 Tenants of Prosperity and All's Well Ends Well Too 2010. Directors Tony Chan Kwok-Fai and Wing Shya will continue to cooperate in filming a new movie, in addition to romantic comedies, possibly a martial arts film.
