Is this going to be on cable anywhere in the States? Or streamed outside of China? I've never seen it before and am curious to check it out (although I don't think I could sit through the whole thing).

I usually watch it on MHz Network's Chinese channel. (I think MHz is in your city.) It's also on my dad's premium Chinese channel on Comcast cable. I'm sure most Chinese cable/satellite channels will carry it. But check MHz's Worldview Network first. (link below)

Normally, I DVR it and skip through it. But really, if you like spectacle (and I do), it's impressive. Actually, from what I've read CCTV's is the more staid of the Galas. The average age of the studio audience seems to be about 65. Politburo members and their ilk, no doubt.

The other provincial galas, I've read, cater to the youth and try to be more hep. (Sort of like how our Rockin' New Year's Eve with Dave Clark has devolved!)

Liu Qian shot to fame and movies from his appearance a few years back. And of-the-moment sensations like 'subway girl' have performed (I think it was her). Jay Chou sang with Song Zuying and did magic one year (with Lin Chi-ling as an assistant). But a little kid performing kungfu stole his limelight as I recall. :D

MHz will rebroadcast it in the evening for days if you happen to miss it. Later, the skits will get subbed and shown again but it's pretty random to catch.

MHz Network - also linked on my Favorites. I guess I should add this to the post, too.

Later the Chinese press will review and scrutinize the acts. They ponder details like, did Faye Wong lip sync, was Liu Qian's magic pre-tapped and edited, etc. Great fun.
