n "Karamay," Xu has crafted a powerful movie by letting the material speak for itself. He doesn't use a narrator or a musical score. An opening sequence showing student's graves zooms in on the portraits of each of their tombstones. He lets the parents vent in lengthy monologues that bring out the depth of their sorrow.

Korean films find an audience in AMC theaters throughout the country

The tantalizing prospect of 3D re-edits of classic Hong Kong kung fu movies was dangled before the participants at the Asia Visual Effects and Digital Film Making Summit 2010: "Emerging Digital Movie Making in Asia" seminar in Theatre 1 of the Convention Center on Tuesday morning.
The cinema's facilities were put to good use as speakers showed footage from some of the latest local 3D productions that had the audience applauding after every clip.

Fire of Conscience grips right from the opening credits sequence, a stunning montage of freeze-framed black-and-white images, which offer clues to the complex crime story to follow. What follows is a frenetic and at times extremely violent crime tale that occasionally veers towards the daft but always manages to be gripping and provocative.

Golden Sun's $15 million remake of "The Chinese Ghost Story," announced at last year's Filmart, will commence filming in April 2010 for a late 2010 release. The film is the second installment of the "new oriental fantasy" trilogy after "Painted Skin" and will be followed by the $15 million "The Lantern." The company is also targeting the Chinese market with the $5 million action comedy "The Swordsman Dream" scheduled for July, and is considering the stereoscopic 3D feasibility for upcoming action adventure "Hidden Strike," now in development. Ming Pao reports that Filmko Entertainment Cheang Pou-Soi (Accident) will direct a 3D IMAX version of Havoc in Heaven (the Monkey King story) with Donnie Yen or Jet Li, starting in October. [Last year, another 3D mainland version of Havoc in Heaven was announced for a release this summer but I don't remember seeing any update on that one.]
In addition, Filmko said Tsui Hark will remake New Dragon Inn in 3D sometime next year. No cast announcements. (Sina)

The third film from experimental Hong Kong filmmaker Scud, Amphetamine is the story of a doomed love affair between a gay man and an emotionally damaged straight man which, while always visually arresting, ultimately rings hollow. The film is certainly flashy – filled throughout with two second flashbacks, dreamlike imagery and fantasy sequences – but its self-conscious artiness dilutes the potential dramatic impact and it plays as more stylistic curio than full-blooded character piece.

Bottom Line: An interesting, female-centered mystery thriller about voyeurism and obsession.Tentatively titled Manhunt, Gao’s film is a noir thriller based on a classic Japanese novel, which will likely be transposed to a Chinese setting. His last film, The Message, produced by China’s Huayi Brothers, premiered at Pusan and grossed around $29m in mainland China.
To and Wai’s romantic comedy, which has the working title Single Men & Women, follows a group of singletons in Hong Kong and Beijing and is set to star Daniel Wu, Louis Koo and Gao Yuanyuan. Both Manhunt and Single Men & Women are scheduled to start shooting before the end of the year.
Media Asia also unveiled a string of big-budget action titles including Andrew Lau’s Legend Of The Fist: The Return Of Chen Zhen, starring Donnie Yen; Felix Chong’s action comedy Once A Gangster, and Su Chao-pin’s Reign Of Assassins, starring Michelle Yeoh and produced by John Woo. Fortissimo Films is handling Western and some Asian territories on Reign Of Assassins.
Media Asia is also selling Dante Lam’s Fire Of Conscience, which had its gala premiere at the Hong Kong International Film Festival last night, and thriller Punished, directed by Law Wing-cheong and produced by To, which has Anthony Wong and Richie Jen heading the cast. (Screen Daily)

Ning Hao Lands at Fortissimo
Fortissimo Films has picked up Chinese director Ning Hao’s highly-anticipated road movie No Man’s Land, starring Yu Nan (Tuya’s Marriage) and rising mainland actor Huang Bo.
The deal, negotiated by Fortissimo chairman Michael J. Werner and China Film Group, is for worldwide rights outside Asia but including Japan and Korea. Hong Kong-based Emperor Motion Pictures is handling the rest of Asia.
No Man’s Land follows a lawyer who has a series of mishaps when he ends up stranded in the Gobi desert.
Ning Hao is one of mainland China’s most bankable directors following films such as 2006 sleeper hit Crazy Stone and its follow-up Crazy Racer which grossed more than $14.5m (RMB100m) in China. (Screen Daily)
Ann Hui’s All About Love tops Mega-Vision slate
Mega-Vision is also lining up its first 3D action film King of Jesters starring two Hong Kong comedians Jim Chim and Wong Cho-lam and featuring Shaolin style kung fu.
Also on Mega-Vision’s slate are Hong Kong filmmaker Patrick Kong’s untitled contemporary drama starring Jennifer Tse, and Wong Jing’s Naked Soldier, which is the third film of Wong’s Naked series, after the success ofNaked Killer (1992) and Naked Weapon (2002). (Screen Daily)

Mr And Mrs China will be produced by Beijing-based Qilin Pictures and Hong Kong’s Taklung Film, and will be shot entirely in 3D. Just Cause will be providing 3D stereoscopic pre-visualization, motion capture and virtual camera services for the project. Yuen Tak, who directed Sniper (2008) with Edison Chen, The Myth (2005) with Jackie Chan and The Legend (1993) with Jet Li, makes his directing debut on the film.
The film is set in 1920s China and follows a Chinese man trying to win over his Japanese wife through a series of fight contests. Yuen says the film will be full of action and requires a large amount of motion capture technique in the pre-shooting stage in order to more precisely present the action when shot in 3D cameras.
