World Cup - Photo of the Day

Paraguay

Denied
Paraguay's lingerie model Larissa Riquelme had promised to strip in the streets of Ascension if the team made the quarter finals.

Argentina
No naked run
Diego Maradona promised a naked run down the streets of Buenos Aires if Argentina won the World Cup

Two more South American teams were bounced out of play, marking three this weekend including Brazil's fall yesterday. In today's first match, Germany scored early and often on Argentina. Diego Maradona's search for redemption fell a little short. I'm still waiting to find out what Lionel Messi is all about. Add him to the list with Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka and Wayne Rooney as World Cup scoring disappointments ($320M in salaries, total of 1 goal among them). Germany, 4-0.

The second match of the day had its fill of excitement and questionable refereeing, again. After a scoreless first half, Paraguay's Cardozo earned a penalty kick after being dragged down by his arm on a corner kick. Cardozo's kick that followed was stopped by Spain. Then, another penalty at the opposite end. Spain's penalty kick was good but then waved off for encroachment. Seemingly more blatant encroachment on Paraguay's PK had been ignored just minutes earlier. Spain's second attempt on the penalty kick redo was rejected by the goal keeper. Paraguay's net minder seemed to commit a foul himself but no call came. Finally, Spain's scoring machine David Villa scored a goal off the right post and Spain managed to hold on for the win, 1-0.

[Update: More on Diego Maradona]

Six PlayStations for the players. Ice cream available at all times. A minimum of three desserts included with each dinner. And state-of-the-art bidet toilets installed in the coach's suite. Those were among the requirements cited by Argentine officials, according to media reports, in arranging lodging for their national team during the 2010 World Cup.Based on the demands, it was tricky to tell whether the Argentines were being managed by an 8-year-old child, a gluttonous eccentric or an over-indulged rock star.
Diego Maradona has been all of those things, at one point or another... (WPost)
